  1. This is the HQ-FAX help file (HQFAX.HLP). Copyright (c) 1996 by HTF Consulting.
  2. You can get a hard copy of this file by entering "Print hqfax.hlp".

  4. First time users are encouraged to study and excercise the tutorial in the
  5. First Time Use section of the Readme file "Readme.HQF".
  6. When you contact us for technical support, we will be happy to assist you,
  7. but we will want to know right away how far you got with the tutorial.
  8.  
  9. ======================== HQ-FAX Function Keys ================================
  10. <ENTER>       is *NOT* an event key. It behaves like <TAB>.
  11. <TAB>         positions the cursor to the next field.
  12. <shift><TAB>  positions the cursor to the previous field.
  13. <F1> entered with the cursor in the file name field or the FONT field or
  14.      the OVERLAY CUSTOM FORM field will produce a list of available files of
  15.      that type. The file name field must have JUST a directory in it, not a
  16.      file name.  EX: C:\HQFAX
  17. <F1> entered with the cursor anywhere else will display this help file.
  18. <Shift><F1> scrolls the readme file (README.HQF) for browsing.
  19.  
  20. <F2>  indicates you are ready to proceed with the conversion and view or send.
  21. <F3>  allows you to verify your input fields before proceding.
  22. <F7>  indicates that you wish to prepare and send a cover sheet.
  23. <F8>  lets you do product registration and ordering.
  24. <F9>  (not shown on the screen) restores the latest screen data from disk.
  25. <F10> saves the current screen data to disk. Data will NOT be saved otherwise!
  26. <ESC> exits the program.
  27.  
  28. ============================== FIELD INPUTS =================================
  29. Registration Key:
  30. Enter your 7-digit Registration Key if you are a registered user.
  31.  
  32. INPUT from:
  33. Print Capture of LPTx:
  34. Enter a 1, 2 or 3 in place of the x to capture print data sent to the corres-
  35. ponding printer port.  This data will be stored in the file "C:\LPTxFILE.ECL"
  36. before being converted to FAX. (x = 1,2,3).  Print Capture will be active for
  37. 100 seconds before the first byte of printer output and for 10 seconds after
  38. the last byte.  Then normal printing will be restored. This data should be in
  39. HP-Laserjet Printer Control Language format, or Epson Control Language format,
  40. or be regular ASCII text.  You may capture a DOS Print-Scrn of a text-based
  41. screen.  When this field is entered, the following field is ignored.
  42.  
  43. The file extension for the print capture file will be what is entered in the
  44. file extension portion of the FILE field. This file extension should indicate
  45. the nature of the print stream (PCL, ECL, txt, etc).
  46. This or the following field is REQUIRED, unless you send just a cover letter.
  47.  
  48. *OR* FILE:
  49. Enter the path and name of an Printer Control Language file which you have
  50. printed to disk from your word processor. For example, c:\wordstar\myfile for
  51. MYFILE.ECL created with Wordstar. You may override the ".ECL" file extension,
  52. but be sure that the file exists. You may also use a text file.
  53. !!ATTENTION!!  As of ver. 4.1, HQ-FAX provides a PCL (HP-Laserjet) printer
  54. interface.  You select this interface by putting "PCL" in the file extension
  55. field, and by using a PCL4 laserjet print driver from your word processor.
  56. "ECL" still indicates the Epson Control Language interface.
  57. This or the previous field is REQUIRED, unless you send just a cover letter.
  58.  
  59. OUTPUT TO:
  60. Image file(s):
  61. Enter the directory and the first name of the file to contain the FAX image(s).
  62. Use an '*' (the default) to indicate the same file name as on the input file.
  63. The file extension will be determined by the FORMAT FOR field, described below.
  64.  
  65. Registered users may specify the '*' at the end of the file name to indicate
  66. sending a set of FAX files with the filename(s): "FILENAMx.APF", where x is
  67. the decimal digits 1 through 9.  These files will be appended together into the
  68. file "FILENAM0.APF", and this one file will be FAXed.
  69. The file name "FILENAM*" is just an example.  The files must have the file
  70. extension of ".APF".  This feature is only useful for sending pre-built FAXes.
  71. This field is REQUIRED.
  72.  
  73. FORMAT FOR:
  74. Modem class // Modem software // Other graphic type:
  75. This required field indicates the format of the FAX-ready output file as well
  76. as the software to be employed in transmitting a FAX. The possible entries are:
  77.  
  78. 00 (Unformatted)
  79.    The output file will be unformatted Huffman compressed data, with a file
  80.    extension of ".FAX".  If you wish to transmit this file you must customize
  81.    the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs.
  82. AD (Auto Detect)
  83.    The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format, with a file
  84.    extension of ".APF".  HQ-FAX proprietary software will transmit the file(s).
  85.    This entry is appropriate when you don't know what type of modem you have
  86.    and your FAX modem software isn't one with which HQ-FAX interfaces.
  87. BF (BITFAX)
  88.    The FAX-ready file will be in BITFAX format with a file extension of ".BFX".
  89.    BITFAX software will be employed to transmit the file(s). The BITFAX direct-
  90.    ory must be in your path.
  91. C1 (Class 1)
  92.    The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format, with a file
  93.    extension of ".APF".  HQ-FAX proprietary software will transmit the file(s).
  94.    This entry is appropriate when you have a class 1 FAX modem.
  95. C2 (Class 2)
  96.    The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format, with a file
  97.    extension of ".APF".  HQ-FAX proprietary software will transmit the file(s).
  98.    This entry is appropriate when you have a class 2 FAX modem.
  99. CA (Communication Application Specification or CAS)
  100.    The FAX-ready file will be in HQ-FAX proprietary format, with a file
  101.    extension of ".APF".  HQ-FAX proprietary software will transmit the file(s).
  102.    This entry is appropriate when you have a CAS FAX modem.
  103. CP (Complete PC)
  104.    The FAX-ready file will be in Complete PC format with a file extension of
  105.    ".0xx", where xx is the page number. The Complete PC software will be
  106.    employed to transmit the file(s).  The Complete PC directory must be in
  107.    your path.
  108. DC (DCX)
  109.    The output file will be in DCX (multi-page PCX format). If you wish to
  110.    transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs.
  111. FR (Frecom)
  112.    The FAX-ready file will be in Frecom FAX96 format with a file extension of
  113.    ".0xx". Frecom FAX96 PC software will be employed to transmit the file(s).
  114.    The FRECOM directory must be in your path.
  115. IN (INTEL)
  116.    See CA above.
  117. PC (PCX)
  118.    The output file(s) will be in PCX format, with a file extension of ".Fxx",
  119.    where xx is the page number.  If you wish to transmit this file you must
  120.    customize the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs, or build your own application.
  121. QL (Quick-Link)
  122.    The FAX-ready file will be in Quick-Link format with a file extension of
  123.    ".QFX". Quick-Link software will be employed to transmit the file(s). The
  124.    QL2FAX directory must be in your path.
  125. TB (TIFF Class B)
  126.    The output file will be in TIFF class B format,  with a file extension of
  127.    ".TIF". If you wish to transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT
  128.    file to your needs, or build your own application.
  129. TF (TIFF Class F)
  130.    The output file will be in TIFF class F format, with a file extension of
  131.    ".TIF".  If you wish to transmit this file you must customize the XXSEND.BAT
  132.    file to your needs, or build your own application.
  133. TH (TIFF Class B Huffman Encoding)
  134.    The output file will be in TIFF class B format with Huffman encoding, with a
  135.    file extension of ".TIF".  If you wish to transmit this file you must
  136.    customize the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs, or build your own application.
  137. TU (TIFF Class B Uncompressed)
  138.    The output file will be in TIFF class B format uncompressed, with a file
  139.    extension of ".TIF".  If you wish to transmit this file you must customize
  140.    the the XXSEND.BAT file to your needs, or build your own application.
  141. This field is REQUIRED.
  142.  
  143. VIEW files:
  144. Enter 'y', 'p' or 't'. Either 'y' or 't' present a "text view" of the image
  145. that is convenient for reading.  A 'p' presents a wide (pixel-for-pixel) view.
  146. This field is OPTIONAL.
  147.  
  148. COMM PORT:
  149. Enter 1, 2, 3 or 4 to identify the com port to which your FAX modem is connect-
  150. ed. This field is REQUIRED for output formats AD, C1, C2, CA and IN only. It is
  151. ignored otherwise.  If you enter a 0 here, the send program will try to detect
  152. the modem's comm port for you.
  153.  
  154. SEND OPTNS:
  155. If you are using Bitfax, The Complete PC, Frecom or Quick-Link software, enter
  156. any send command options provided by your modem software such as a recipient
  157. list or a schedule time. See your modem software documentation.
  158.  
  159. If HQ-FAX proprietary software will be used to transmit the FAX (output format
  160. is AD, C1, C2, CA or IN) then the following options are available:
  161.  
  162. /IDaaaaa...      Set the Station ID of the sending FAX station
  163. /IRQn            Set Interrupt ReQuest Line (n = 1-9)
  164. /BDnnnnn         Set the port baud rate (4800, 7200, 9600, 19200 the default)
  165. /DP              Use pulse (rotary) dialing
  166. /FH              Flash Hook before dialing
  167. /LOG             Keep a log file: "HQFSEND.log" (Registered users only!)
  168. /LOnnnnn         Set the low baud rate (4800, 7200, 9600, 19200 the default)
  169. /XBPSnnnnn       Set the FAX bit per second rate (2400, 4800, 7200, 9600 the
  170.                  default, 12000, 14400)
  171. /MIxxxxxxx...    Set a modem initialization string
  172. /HI              Use highest possible bit rate and ECM (Error Correcting Mode)
  173.                  if available.
  174. /TIaaaaa....     Set sender title: (Registered users only!)
  175. /TMhh:mm         Set a time for a delayed send in 24 hour time format
  176.                    (Registered users only!)
  177. /TRC             Activate a trace of Xmit & Recv packets between HQFSEND.exe
  178.                  and the modem. Output will be stored in "HQFSEND.trc".
  179. This field is OPTIONAL.
  180.  
  181. SEND TO:
  182. Enter the complete string of digits that you wish to be dialed. This may
  183. include a leading '9' or '1' or a long distance dialing prefix, whatever is
  184. required and the FAX modem software allows. See the section on sending FAXes
  185. in the HQ-FAX Users Manual as well as your modem documentation.
  186.  
  187. Registered users may enter /PLfilnam.xyz here. This will cause HQ-FAX to use
  188. the file named after the '/PL' as a list of recipients to send the FAX(es) to.
  189. This list must be an ASCII text file with the phone number as the first of
  190. several space-delimited fields, with no embedded spaces in the phone number.
  191.  
  192. This field is REQUIRED to send a FAX.
  193.  
  194. ======================== SPECIAL PROCESSING OPTIONS =========================
  195. ALL of these fields are OPTIONAL.
  196.  
  197. DEFAULT (draft) FONT:
  198. Enter the name of your chosen default font. This font will only replace the
  199. draft font. You must have another mono-spaced font to replace the default of
  200. COORIER. Any font selected inside the ECL file overrides this choice.
  201.  
  202. OVERLAY CUSTOM FORM:
  203. Enter the name of a PCX file which you wish to use as a pre-printed form or
  204. custom stationary. A leading '!' indicates you wish the PCX file to be used
  205. in reverse-video.
  206.  
  207. RESOLUTION:
  208. Enter (S) for standard resolution or retain the default of (F)ine. This field
  209. refers to the image quality of the Group 3 FAX images. Standard resolution is
  210. 200 dpi (dots per inch) horizontally by 100 dpi vertically. Fine resolution
  211. is 200 by 200 dpi. Fine resolution FAXes require about twice as long to send.
  212. Standard resolution is not suitable for Letter-Quality FAXes.
  213.  
  214. PAGE RANGE:
  215. Enter a page range that you want converted, for example 1 to 10 for the first
  216. ten pages.  This feature is now a registration benefit.
  217.  
  218. PAGE DIMENSIONS:
  219. Enter the page size you wish to use.  The default "NA" = (1728 X 2156) pixels.
  220. A3 = (2432 X 3307), A4 = (1728 X 2340) and B4 = (2048 X 2780).  All dimensions
  221. are expressed in the Group 3 FAX fine resolution of 200 by 200 dots per inch.
  222. This feature is now a registration benefit.
  223.  
  224. (C)ONTIGUOUS IMAGE // (M)ANY FILES:
  225. Enter 'c' to produce one long image without page breaks, taking advantage of
  226. the scrolling property of FAX machine paper.
  227. Enter 'm' to produce many files (one per page).
  228. Blank (' ') produces the normal case of all pages in one FAX file.
  229. Blank is the default.
  230.  
  231. ============================ ADVANCED OPTIONS ===============================
  232. ALL of these fields are OPTIONAL.
  233.  
  234. PRODUCE LANDSCAPE MODE:
  235. Registered users will be able to process landscape mode images.  These image(s)
  236. will be rotated 90 degrees before being FAXed. This feature will require
  237. temporary disk space of about 500K per page for an intermediate file.
  238.  
  239. REVERSE_VIDEO INDICATOR:
  240. Enter a special character to be interpreted as toggling reverse-video on and
  241. off from inside the ECL file.  The default is the ~ character.
  242.  
  243. Dbl-Print --> Rvrs-Video:
  244. Enter 'y' to have double-print control codes in the ECL file converted to
  245. reverse-video, otherwise boldface is used to implement double-print.
  246.  
  247. CONVERT ECL GRAPHICS TO 200DPI:
  248. Entering a 'y' here indicates that you wish to have graphics within your
  249. document expanded by 10% to accomodate FAX resolution versus printing to an
  250. Epson printer. This is the default. If your word processor is painting the
  251. page purely in graphics, you will want to override this feature by entering
  252. an 'n'. Some experimenting may be necessary.
  253.  
  254. VIEW CONVERSION PROCEDURE:
  255. This feature is not available to unregistered users. See the User Manual for
  256. details.
